In his joint doctoral dissertation (Tampere University and University of Geneva), M.Sc. (Tech.) Muhammad Suleman explored how large industrial firms organize and renew their IT operating models to enable digital transformation. Drawing on multiple case studies in the oil & gas and chemical sectors, the research identifies key components of IT operating models, different organizing logics, and common challenges such as fragmented ownership, legacy constraints, and governance complexity. The key results highlight how firms are shifting toward product- and platform-centric operating models and demonstrate that digital transformation is not a one-time change but a continuous process requiring ongoing renewal of IT structures, governance, and ways of working. The proposed insights support organizations in improving agility, coordination between business and IT, and the realization of value from digital technologies.
