Designing and Evaluating 3D Knowledge Visualization Techniques for Urban Planning

Many urban or environmental resources (data from geographic information systems, models related to air or water quality, transportation, construction…) have been defined with the objective of helping practitioners and stakeholders in their decision - making processes. 3D city models - representing in 3 dimensions the geometric elements of a city - are increasingly used in different cities all around the world for an intended wide range of applications beyond mere visualization. Such uses are made possible by using semantically enriched 3D city models. Those models are in fact 3D city models extended with knowledge issued from urban or environmental resources that are interconnected so as taking into account the semantic interrelations between them. The challenges that occur relate on how interactively visualize such enriched 3D city models as the added knowledge can issue from different fields (transport, construction…), be of different kinds (quantitative measures of noise/qualitative soundscapes…), take different forms (structured data from geographical information systems/unstructured documents…), relate to different scales (city as a whole, buildings…) or even be not georeferenced (legal text for example). This challenge is particularly important in the case of a sustainable development as the city has to be planned in a holistic way.
The aim of this project is to create and to compare 3D knowledge visualization techniques for urban planning.
