Exploiting Ubiquitous Robotic Technologies towards Increased Awareness: Intelligent Care Giving to Elderly People


Population ageing is a phenomenon of social and economic concern, which is catalysing research within the topic of Ambient Assisted Living. Technological advancements in Robotics and Information Communications Technologies (ICT) are meeting the needs of elderly people, ensuring them with an alternative way of ageing well and increasing their standard quality of life. Low cost mobile computerized systems and robots are increasingly prevalent in society, which are able to provide a wide range of different information types. An overview over some of the most common sensing devices is covered. The availability of such multimodal data is relevant in the sense that it grants interfacing systems the access to real-time information about elderly and their environment, in both private homes and care centres. But, how can this information be useful? To answer this question, we introduce some popular methods for action recognition and emotion analysis from multimodal data. In fact, they give artificial systems the ability to exhibit intelligent and adaptive behaviour capabilities. Being able to identify a specific person, what is the current emotional state or detecting abnormal actions such as falling down, are seen as basic requirements for a system which aims to play a social role and autonomously assist human beings. These methods are fundamental in providing personalized responses, adequate to meet specific individual needs and/or specific environment and contextual information. The talk concludes with the identification of the challenges about applying these techniques and a discussion on how they can contribute to better solutions satisfying the specific needs of an ageing end-user population.

Short Bio

Luís Santos has expertise in probabilistic approaches for representing and analysing human movements and emotions, within intelligent cognitive systems and human-machine interaction for practical applications. Other topics of interest include computer vision, robotics, signal processing and machine learning. He has been developing his research activities within the Artificial Perception for Intelligent Systems and Robotics group (, from the Institute of Systems and Robotics of the University of Coimbra (UC). He is currently a seconded researcher in the frame of the Social Robot Project from the UC to the Citard Services Ltd Cyprus. He holds a M.Sc. degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering by the UC, specialization in Automation and Robotics. He has a PhD thesis entitled “Laban Movement Analysis: A Bayesian Computational Approach to Human Motion Hierarchical Analysis and Learning”. He previous experience includes research for the European Project BACS (November 2007 to February 2010) in the areas of human-robot interaction and movement analysis using Bayesian methodologies.
