Activity Level Estimator

Abstract :

Increasingly, we use mobile phones for diverse activities in our daily life, for example for entertainment, education, or information purposes. In our research, we assess the feasibility of using mobile phones to track users’ physical activity and estimate their energy expenditure. Activity Level Estimator (ALE) is an application developed for Android-based mobile phones and it uses the phone’s built-in accelerometer as a sensor. ALE analyzes and calculates how much time a user spends on each activity level and gives estimation of the user’s energy expenditure. ALE is designed to be operational as a non-intrusive application running in the background and it was tested with a number of users wearing their device in their pocket. Through extensive user tests, we assessed the accuracy of ALE and compared it against a dedicated BodyMedia SenseWear device, which we consider as a “gold standard”. We conclude that ALE is on average 86% accurate for different modes of walking and it underestimates user’s energy expenditure only by 23% during a period of 24 hours.
