Physical Object Protection based on Digital Micro-structure Fingerprinting

Abstract :
Counterfeit objects are increasingly present on the market, leading to monetary loss and physical danger to consumers. Genuine and counterfeit objects can be distinguished based on their micro-structures, which are available free of cost, require no modification of the object, and are both unique an practically impossible to reproduce. Unfortunately, using micro-structures directly has a number of issues, in particular related to run-time, storage capacity and security. Digital content fingerprints from micro-structure images are an attractive option for the development of modern anti-counterfeiting systems that can authenticate or identify objects. Unfortunately, a complete information-theoretical framework for the analysis of fingerprinting has largely been missing. Likewise, literature has not addressed the issue of partially successful attempts to reproduce digital fingerprints, or develop appropriate countermeasures. The particular statistics of fingerprints are incompatible with the assumptions underlying many fast identification methods, leading to scalability issues. Last, no public database is available that can be used as a benchmark for fingerprinting methods.
In this thesis, these issues are addressed by both theoretical results and practical experiments. A new, more accurate method of matching fingerprints based on the reliability of the individual bits is introduced and evaluated. The reliability of bits also plays a crucial role in the proposed scalable algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed solutions has been extensively tested in data-sets of both synthetic and real micro-structures. The holistic approach to the problem has revealed several trade-offs between the different requirements, and several recommended design decisions have consequently been devised.
