The Future of Web Search
Abstract:
Our premise is that people don’t want to search. Instead, people want to get their tasks done and get straight to their answers. In fact, search depends on your intent. Hence, Web search is no longer about document retrieval but a means to achieve web-mediated goals. Fast task completion may be achieved immediately presenting short cuts, deep links, or enhanced results coming from editorial content and the SearchMonkey ecosystem. However we have to do more.
What are the challenges we are facing? You have to do it fast and it has to be scalable. So how we do this? We move from a web of pages to a web of objects. People, places, businesses, etc. Intents of searchers are satisfied by presenting objects and attributes. It’s not exactly the semantic web but about finding implicit relations through web usage. That means to leverage the wisdom of crowds behind all people querying. To exemplify we present several examples where we exploit the Web 2.0 to improve search by using text, tags, images, and queries.
