Business and Production Models for Software Services
With Dr. Ciarán Bryce, co-founder Shared Objects, research director at INRIA

Abstract:
This seminar examines the principles of, and challenges facing, Software Services. The software services domain supports the business of production, use and maintenance of commodity software. This is not solely a technical domain, as most people involved in today's software industry are not programmers. Even from a programming perspective, much effort must be spent on business analysis and team organization – not inherently technical issues – to get quality software. A well recognized technical principle in software development is component reuse, but when a software component is reused, the issue of software ownership - and licensing - arises. When a company requires a new information system or component, they inevitably must decide if it is better to develop it or to purchase it, and must also obtain the means to support the maintenance the system. These issues have led to several business models for software. Traditionally, the teaching of software has taken a technical focus. In this seminar, emphasis is placed on software licensing, business models and on development processes to support software development and maintenance that aim at quality software and that seek to reduce development costs.
